Description
An exceptionally beautiful and sophisticated English shrub rose with loads of sensory appeal and an antique look and feel, the blooms of 'Windermere' are similar in appearance to those of the climbing 'Wollerton Old Hall' but in a shrub form. In flushes from spring to frost, abundant, fat and rounded buds open to full, cabbage-shaped flowers that are rich creamy white with glowing apricot-pink centers upon opening turning ivory white as they age. The blooms exude a deliciously warm fruity fragrance with a definite hint of citrus, which is enchantingly divine! The first bloom flush is a sight to see nearly covering the entire bush with very good rebloom afterwards. The blooms aren't as long-lasting as some other varieties in a vase, however if you cut right before or when the buds begin to open they'll last several days or more. Very healthy, Windermere forms a neat, dense shrub to 4 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, making it a good fit for smaller garden spaces or in containers. We've seen so serious or disease problems with this one.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 feet tall and equally as wide, the Windermere English Shrub Rose is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or as a hedge in sunny to partially shaded borders. Her smaller stature makes for a good fit in containers that can be situated on or around patios, decks and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to cottage gardens, white or pink theme gardens, cutting gardens, antique and old-fashioned gardens, and fragrance and sensory gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Windermere English Shrub Rose is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average or above average fertility and full sun to part shade for the best flowering. As with all other roses, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves. Flowering will be best if the plant receives at least 5 hours of direct sun during the day.
