Description

The Winston Churchill Golden Lawson Cypress is a pyramid of lushness and glowing color, one of the best and most beautiful golden Lawsoniana varieties. It features gracefully pendulous, feathery plumes of golden foliage that hold its color year-round. It is slow-growing, gradually reaching a height of 15 to 20 feet over time, which doesn't lend well for a privacy screen; however, it makes for a stunning specimen or grouping in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings.

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana was first discovered (by Euro-Americans) near Port Orford in Oregon and introduced into cultivation in 1854, by collectors working for the Lawson & Son nursery in Edinburgh, Scotland, after whom it was named as Lawson Cypress by the describing botanist Andrew Murray. Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Winston Churchill' was discovered at Hogger’s Nursery, East Grinstead, and released to the marketplace after the second world war.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide, the Winston Churchill Golden Lawson Cypress is ideal for use as a specimen or in spaced groupings at 12 or more feet apart in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders. It is also an excellent accent tree in home foundation plantings. Its growth rate is too slow to be considered worthy for use in privacy screen plantings. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, golden theme gardens, native plant gardens, and rock gardens.

Spacing:  Best as a specimen or in spaced groupings at 12 feet or more apart

Cultural Preferences

The Winston Churchill Golden Lawson Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It doesn't like extended drought or constantly soggy or wet soil. The foliage color is more intense with more sun. In hot-summer climates, it will prefer some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours when the sun is most intense. No pruning is required to maintain its naturally dense and pyramidal form.
