Description
A fine selection of our North American native White Fir, Abies concolor 'Wintergold' is a splendid evergreen conifer for lighting up the landscape with bright color. In spring, the lush new growth emerges a glowing chartreuse turning to grey-green and buttery yellow as the season progresses. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the butter yellow begins to intensify transitioning to a spectacular brilliant golden yellow throughout the winter months. The needle color won't fade or burn in full sun. Adding maybe 6 inches in height per year, Wintergold might reach 15 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide when all grown up, making it a good fit as a glowing specimen in smaller garden spaces and home foundation plantings. If you're looking to add eye-catching soft texture and bright color to your landscape year round, plant Wintergold in full to mostly sun and well-drained soil and it won't disappoint!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide at its base, the Wintergold White Fir is ideal for use as an eye-catching focal point specimen in the sunny landscape or home foundation plantings. Two can be used to frame an entryway or plant a grouping of three spaced 9 to 10 feet apart. Also suitable for containers. A fine addition to conifer gardens, yellow or gold theme gardens, native gardens and rock gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen, in small groupings spaced 10' apart, or use 2 to frame an entry
Growing Preferences
The Wintergold White Fir is easy to grow in a damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and at least 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day for brightest foliage color. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water.
