Description

A beautiful and extremely rare Japanese Maple, 'Yellow Princess' provides a wonderful show of color all year around on a smallish upright tree. Being that its a recent discovery and introduction, we can't say for sure its mature height over time however, based on its growth rate, we're estimating it might reach around 15 feet tall and 12 feet wide or so when all grown up. Small golden leaves emerge in spring gradually darkening to light to medium green shades in summer that contrast beautifully with the bright yellow branches and stems. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the leaves turn to stunning shades of gold and ember. As the cool season progresses the golden bark darkens to fiery hues of orange and red, returning to golden-yellow as temperatures warm back up in spring. Vigrous and easy to grow in the ground or containers, Yellow Princess is a colorful and captivating accent tree in small to medium size landscape spaces, home foundation plantings, or on or around patios and other outdoor living spaces.

Landscape & Garden Uses

To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Yellow Princess Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, three can be planted in a spaced grouping where space allows or two can be used to frame an entrace.

Spacing: At least 15 feet apart in groupings

Note:  One Japanese Maple can make a landscape...that is if you don't overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when selecting companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcover plants that won't interfere at all with your tree.

Growing Preferences

Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow in the ground or in containers. Container culture can extend their useful range. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.

In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, Yellow Princess is one that will tolerate full sun.

Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
