Description
A beautiful and valuable asset in the shade garden, Salvia koyamae, commonly known as Yellow Woodland Sage, has so many great attributes that it's hard to know where to start. It is a delightful sage that forms a 2-foot-tall by 3-foot-wide clump of large, 6-inch-long by 5-inch-wide, fuzzy, heart-shaped green leaves that give the garden a lush, bold, tropical effect. In late summer through fall, spiked clusters of pretty, soft-yellow tubular flowers stand erect above the foliage to provide color and late-season nectar for butterflies and hummingbirds. Thriving almost anywhere in the country (USDA Zones 4a-11), it is moderately drought-tolerant, so it is perfect for planting under large shade trees, tall decks, and any other shady areas. Morning and evening sun are okay, but do give it shade in the afternoon. You might also be happy to know it's not on the menu for deer and rabbits who turn their noses up at it. Yellow Woodland Sage will surely be a captivating conversation piece in the garden!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 18 to 24 inches tall and 36 inches wide, Yellow Woodland Sage is ideal for growing in garden beds, shady woodland borders, or medium to large-sized pots, planters, and other containers 18 inches or more in diameter. You want a larger pot to give the roots plenty of room to grow, so you don't have to water the plant as much in summer. Planted in the ground, the plant won't require as much attention to watering. If you can, plant this Sage outside a window or close to patios, decks, porches, and other outdoor sitting areas so you can enjoy watching the hummingbirds and butterflies feed from late summer through fall. It is a fine addition to woodland shade gardens, hummingbird gardens, perennial gardens, wildflower gardens, yellow theme gardens, tropical-look gardens, and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
Yellow Woodland Sage is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil with average fertility and partial to full shade. Morning and evening sun are okay, but provide shade during the afternoon when the sunlight is most intense. Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, but will appreciate occasional supplemental water during extended summer droughts. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if the foliage starts to wilt during the heat of summer.
