Description

'Yuletide' is one of, if not the most popular of Camellia sasanqua varieties. Perhaps it's because of its long bloom season, which begins mid-fall and continues through the Christmas season. Or maybe it's the masses of dogwood-like, bright, true-red flowers with those prominent bright yellow stamens? Or perhaps it's the upright form and dense, lustrous, dark green foliage that make for a great hedge, small tree, or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall)? Whatever it is, Yuletide is a true garden jewel that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing with a very upright habit 8 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide (depending on pruning), the Yuletide Camellia can be grown as a shrub or small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge or background plant in landscape borders. It is especially lovely as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. With an annual pruning, it can be formed into a column. A fine addition to camellia gardens, red theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, and woodland borders.

Suggested Spacing:  4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Camellias adapt well to various soil types. However, they prefer moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellias grow and bloom better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
