Description

A hardy and long-lived perennial plant with multiple attractions to please the senses, the Zebra Sweet Iris features colorful foliage, colorful flowers, and sweet aroma. Also known as the Dalmation or Variegated Sweet Iris, this dazzler forms a clump of striking, sword-like, variegated white and grey-green leaves that can't help but be noticed in the garden. In late spring to early summer, abundant and beautiful fragrant lavender-blue bearded irises are perched atop tall and sturdy stems. But the foliage is the main star of the show on this Iris throughout the season and year round in mild climates.

Note: Our container-grown Iris can be planted in the garden year round!

Landscape & Garden Uses
Zebra Sweet Iris is ideal for planting in garden beds and landscape borders. Plant it close to patios, decks, porches and other outdoor sitting spaces where the beautiful flowers can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to Iris gardens, purple or white theme gardens, rock gardens, fragrance gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 12 inches apart for mass plantings;  2.5 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Iris pallida are easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. Our container-grown iris can be planted year round! They will grow in most any average soil that is well drained and full sun to part shade. We suggest 6 or more hours of direct sunlight for best blooming. Constantly wet soil is a killer. Planting them on a slope or in raised beds helps to ensure good drainage. Mix in some composted organic matter to improve drainage in heavy clay soils.

When planting Iris, we suggest spacing plants at least 24 inches apart to allow for future spread of the plant. Dig a hole 2 to 3 times as wide as the root ball and plant so that the rhizomes (roots) are exposed slightly above ground level. Avoid planting your Bearded Iris too deep. As mentioned, planting on a slope or in raised beds will help to ensure proper soil drainage.
