Description
A charming little true dwarf Korean Fir, 'Alpine Star,' forms a somewhat upright, irregular, rounded ball or pyramid of incredibly dark foliage. The short stems are clothed with short dark green needles with silvery undersides. Clusters of contrasting tiny white buds at the stem tips look like stars, hence the name. Alpine Star is a very slow grower that might reach 24 to 30 inches tall and wide over time, making it a perfect fit for small garden spaces and containers. It requires no pruning and is more heat tolerant than other fir types. Though we have it listed as cold hardy to 5b some sources say it is hardy in Zone 4. A cute gem, Alpine Star is destined to be a conversation piece in the garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Alpine Star Korean Fir is ideal for a specimen in a small garden space or container or in spaced groupings where space allows. It is also a fine accent in home foundation plantings, conifer gardens, and rock gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Use as a specimen or space at least 3 feet apart in groupings
Growing Preferences
The Alpine Star Korean Fir is easy to grow in damp to moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or pots. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture must be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water. No pruning is necessary.
