Description
This is the cone topiary form of the American Boxwood, Buxus sempervirens, a soft-textured, slow-growing (4-6" per year) evergreen shrub that will grow in sun or part shade. The foliage is glossy, deep blue-green. Whether growing in the ground or containers, this refined topiary is excellent for accentuating entryways or as a centerpiece or focal point specimen in small garden spaces. One trimming annually is all it needs to maintain its tight, dense, pyramidal form.
Landscape & Gardens Uses
Growing slowly to 6 to 12 feet in height and 5 to 8 feet wide, depending on pruning, the American Boxwood Cone Topiary is ideal for a specimen or grouping in small to medium-sized landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Two can be used to frame an entrance, and it can also be planted in spaced rows to line a drive, walkway, or other surface in the landscape. Excellent for pots, planters, and other containers, and a fine addition to topiary gardens, formal gardens, English gardens, and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
The CAmerican Boxwood is easy to grow and requires minimal pruning to maintain its dense form. It will grow in various soils but prefers a moist, well-drained loam in full sun to part shade. Four or more hours of sunlight daily is suggested. When grown in containers, we recommend a 50/50 mix of potting soil and potting mix in a well-draining pot. Make sure the pot has a drainage hole in the bottom, and consider lining the pot's interior with landscape fabric or other cloth to prevent the drainage hole from becoming stopped up with roots. it responds very well to trimming for shaping purposes. Do say after the new growth in spring has fully emerged. Up to half the length of the new growth can be trimmed at this time.
