Description

The Black Forest Cake Heuchera was perfectly named. It features a dense mound about 6 inches high and 12 inches wide of dark purple-brown to nearly black leaves. "Cake" in the name comes from the candle-like spikes of pretty, vibrant pinkish-red flowers that rise about 6 inches above the foliage in late spring through early summer. The color contrast between foliage and flowers is stunning and is sure to make for a captivating conversation piece in the garden. Very easy to grow and heat- and humidity-tolerant, we suggest growing Black Forest Cake in partial to full shade, as the leaves tend to scorch slightly when exposed to direct sunlight in the afternoon. That said, we hear full sun is tolerated in cool-summer climates.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a mound to 6 inches tall and 12 inches wide, with flowers that reach 12 inches high, Black Forest Cake Heuchera is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and groupings or as a border along paths and walkways. It is excellent as a solo or combined with other plants in containers. A fine addition to Heuchera gardens, woodland gardens, black, pink, or red theme gardens, rock gardens, perennial shade gardens, cottage gardens, and butterfly and hummingbird gardens.

In garden beds or containers, we like to combine Heuchera plants with other Heuchera varieties, hosta lilies, perennial ferns, and other part-shade to shade-loving plants and trees.

Suggested Spacing:  10 to 12 inches apart for groupings;  30 inches or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Heuchera is easy to grow.

Sun Preference:  Black Forest Heuchera prefers part to full shade. Avoid direct afternoon sunlight, as it might burn the leaves, especially in hot summer climates.

Soil Preferences: Heuchera prefers moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. In the warmer climates of the southern zones, plants are often evergreen, retaining nice foliage color throughout the winter season. In colder, northern zones, foliage may discolor or die back over a harsh winter. Prune unsightly foliage away before new growth emerges in late winter or early spring. Plant them with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
