Description

One of, if not the richest, deepest reds of the Hardy Hibiscus we offer, 'Blackberry Merlot' features abundant, huge, velvety deep red flowers that measure up to 8 inches across. In our gardens, the exotic-looking flowers start coming in early to midsummer and continue through early fall. The flowers stand out beautifully against the dark, rich green foliage of a bush that grows to 4.5 feet tall and 4 feet wide, making it a perfect choice as an accent, grouping, or hedge for landscape borders, garden beds, and large containers. For those in USDA Zone 4, where winter low temperatures can drop to -30F, and south to central Florida Zone 9, who love bold and beautiful flowers and want to add a tropical look and feel to their garden, Blackberry Merlot is sure to please you and your hummingbirds year after year after year. Ensure that you plant this one in a spot that receives five or more hours of sunlight daily, as the more light it receives, the darker the foliage and the more flowers it produces.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 4.5 feet tall and 4 feet wide, the Blackberry Merlot Hibiscus is ideal for planting in garden beds, pots, planters, and other containers. Whether used as a specimen or in groupings, this beauty is suitable for use as a backdrop for lower-growing plants in flower gardens. It is perfect for adding a bold tropical flair to your outdoor living spaces or home foundation planting. It is a fine addition to perennial gardens, tropical theme gardens, hummingbird gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, and red theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  3 to 3.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 7 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Hardy Hibiscus are very easy to grow. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine, with at least five hours of direct sunlight daily. During prolonged periods of summer drought, plants will appreciate supplemental water to bloom their best. Maintenance is minimal, requiring just one pruning a year to prune plants back to the ground when new growth begins to emerge in spring.
