Description

A North American native and all-natural beauty that is exceptionally easy to grow, 'Blonde Ambition' Blue Grama Grass has raised Bouteloua gracilis to a higher level of appeal and charm. With foliage, growth habit and size very similar to muhly grass, this ornamental grass features horizontal and elegant blonde color seed heads that float like flags on thin stems that rise above an upright 2.5 to 3 feet tall clump of attractive thin blue-green leaves. Blonde Ambition was named a 2011 Plant Select Winner for its resistance to pests, dry conditions, and exceptional good looks and long-lasting attractiveness in garden beds and containers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an upright grassy clump 2.5 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, tBlonde Ambition Grama Grass is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in small to large groupings in landscape borders and garden beds. Also works great for mass plantings on embankments, hillsides and slopes, where its roots act as a soil stabilizer for erosion control. Makes a nice centerpiece in combination container gardens and is must in ornamental grass gardens and a fine addition to rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs). A lovely display for any sunny spot!

Suggested Spacing:  2.5 feet apart for mass plantings; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Grama Grass is every easy to grow and maintain. It is resistant to heat, humidity, sun, and drought. Make sure to plant it in a site with very well-drained soil. Add sand and or small gravel to dense clay soils. Will appreciate moisture and a little plant food during the first growing season to establish itself but after that is drought tolerant and requires no fertilizer. Full sun is preferred for best flowering however the plant will tolerate and still flower with some light shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for best flowering. Foliage can be cut back to just above the ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge in spring.
