More than just a bush with some of the sweetest tasting berries, the Blue Gold Blueberry Bush also has great year round ornamental qualities, which makes it a fine candidate for the edible landscape as well. In late spring it features abundant clusters of very pretty bell-shaped flowers that are followed in early to mid summer by equally abundant and wonderfully sweet blueberries that are great for fresh eating right off the bush, or in baking, smoothies and desserts. What's really neat about this variety is its unusual golden yellow fall foliage and fantastic yellow stems that take the stage during winter, hence "Gold" in the name. At 5 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, Blue Gold makes for a fine specimen in smaller garden spaces, an accent in home foundation plantings, or in groupings or as a hedge where space allows. Though self fertile it will produce a higher yield of berries with cross pollination from a different northern highbush blueberry variety.

The Blue Gold Blueberry grows best in an acidic (pH of 4.8 to 5.2), organically rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. The more sun the better for best berry production. The shallow, fibrous roots of blueberry plants like a consistently moist but well-drained soil which can be provided by with a layer of organic mulch. Although blueberries are self-fertile, cross-pollination produces the best fruit crop (larger berries and larger yields). Therefore, because Blue Gold is a northern highbush variety, it is best to plant more than one northernhigh bush variety that will bloom around the same time. Blueberry season can be extended by planting early, mid-season and late varieties. Make sure to plant two different cultivars/varieties for each season.
