One of the first of the Perovskia to begin blooming, 'Blue Jean Baby' Russian Sage has one of if not the longest bloom periods of any variety in our gardens. Only reaching about 30 inches tall and wide with a distinctly upright habit and sturdy the stems that stand erect, from mid summer into fall, abundant spikes of lavender-blue flowers form a beautiful cloud of soothing color in the landscape. The fragrant flowers contrast nicely with the soft-textured, fragrant, fern-like grey-green leaves. Everything about this plant is soft and soothing! While the butterflies, hummingbrrds and beneficial pollinators will thank you for the flowers, the deer and rabbits turn their nose up to it. Russian Sage is one of those plants that loves the heat, tolerates poor soils and drought, and will take as much blazing sun as you can give it. An attractive and long blooming plant that will provide wonderful sensory appeal in the landscape. 

Growing just shy of 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the Blue Jean Baby Russian Sage is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces, or in groupings or as a border in larger landscape and garden borders. A fine addition to herb gardens, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, pollinator gardens, rock gardens, perennial gardens, fragrance gardens, blue theme gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).


Growing Preferences

Blue Jean Baby Russian Sage is easy to grow in a variety of soils, including well-draining clay, but prefers a loamy to sandy, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH ranging from 7.0 to 7.5 on the pH scale. It is also salt tolerant and drought tolerant and therefore suited for growing in seaside gardens.
