Description

A plant that we discovered is not only deer resistant but actually repels deer, Bog Sage, what we've always called "Deer Away Salvia," is a hardy and beautiful flowering perennial plant that a produces abundant spikes of pretty sky-blue flowers from late spring to frost! It is a fast growing and moisture-loving plant with upright stems that spread to form an airy patch in the garden about 6 feet tall and equally as wide. Exceptionally versatile, Bog Salvia tolerates dry periods well and will grow in sun or part shade.

Though humans cannot smell the odor of its leaves, we've found that deer can, and they hate and turn their nose up to Bog Sage! A great plant for use to form a hedge around vegetable and other gardens that deer might want to visit. On the other hand, its flowers will attract butterflies and  other beneficial pollinators!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 to 6 feet tall and spreading to 6 feet or more wide, Bog Salvia is an ideal choice for use in wet or boggy areas of the landscape. That said, it tolerates temporary dry conditions. It is ideal for use to plant near or around plants that attract deer, to repel them. A fine addition to butterfly and pollination gardens, bog gardens, cottage gardens, sunny or partially shaded woodland borders, widflower gardens, and blue color theme gardens. Looks great near the garden pond or other bodies of water.

Spacing Suggestions: 2 to 3 feet apart for mass plantings or solid borders

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Salvia species is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Bog Sage grows best in a consistently moist soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Will tolerate dry periods but flowers best with a moist soil. Cut to the ground before spring.
