Description
A spectacular heat tolerant Southern Indica evergreen Azalea that lives up to its name, 'Brilliant' displays LOADS of large flowers with ruffled petals in a brilliant, nearly fluorescent watermelon-red. The flowers are so abundant they nearly cover the rich green evergreen foliage in spring. The Southern Indica Azaleas are recognized by many as the most heat, humidity and sun tolerant of all azaleas, performing well as far south as central Florida! The also tend to be faster and larger growing than many other types of evergreen azaleas. Brilliant reaches 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide when all grown up making it a fine choice as an accent in smaller spaces or in groupings or as a natural hedge where space allows.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide at maturity, the ‘Brilliant’ Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a natural hedge where space allows in landscape and woodland borders. Also nice as an ac cent or hedge in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Azalea and Rhododendron gardens, pink or red theme gardens, butterfly gardens, Asian gardens and cottage gardens.
Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedges; 10' or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Brilliant Southern Indica Azalea is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average or better fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers an acid soil that is rich in organic matter. Though it will tolerate full sun we think azaleas look and feel most at home in a partially shaded environment with morning and/or evening sun but a little shade or filtered sun during the hottest afternoon hours. The Southern Indica Azaleas have moderate drought tolerance when established. No pruning is necessary but responds well to it for size control or shaping purposes. Prune right after flowering in spring.
