Description
Named after the famous shores of Cape Cod, the flower color on the Cape Cod Boys Siberian Iris will bring to mind soothing feelings of beaches and the sea. This selection features abundant flowers with petals in shades of sky blue and prominent sun-yellow signals to complete the beach-like look and feel. The flowers are excellent for cutting and displaying in a vase or floral arrangement. This is one of those perennial flowers you'll look forward to seeing bloom in late spring to early summer. Even when not in bloom, the upright clump of grassy blue-green foliage stays clean and attractive throughout the season, providing a lovely vertical accent in the garden. Highly adaptable, you can grow Cape Code Boys in almost any moist to wet but well-drained soil in the garden or containers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
While most Iris are grown only in flower garden beds, Cape Cod Boys Siberian Iris is considered a "landscape iris." The dense foliage clumps it forms are excellent vertical accents in the landscape that can be used in design, much like we use many ornamental grasses. Growing up to 32 inches tall and spreading slowly to 2 feet wide, it is ideal for an accent plant in smaller garden spaces and is truly stunning in groupings in more extensive landscape borders. It's such a neat, vertical clump that remains attractive throughout the year that we have no problems suggesting it as an accent or in groupings in home foundation plantings. Cape Cod Boys is an excellent centerpiece or accent in container gardens as well and a fine addition to blue theme gardens, Iris gardens, rock gardens, Asian gardens, Zen gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for mass plantings; 4 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Cape Code Boys Siberian Iris is easy to grow when planted in moist but well-drained soils of average to low fertility in full sun to light shade. It is very low maintenance. After cutting the plant back to the ground in late winter, feed it with organic flower food.
