Description

A beautiful native North American heat-tolerant Lupine that will thrive where true Lupines won't because of the heat. Carolina Lupine, Thermopsis villosa, is one of those flowering perennial plants that will always have you looking forward to its glorious bloom in late spring to early summer. It is a captivating plant in the garden that's super-hardy and easy to grow. It features tall spikes of pretty yellow to soft-yellow sweet-pea-like flowers that hummingbirds, butterflies, and beneficial pollinators will appreciate. If the foliage is cut back about a month after flowering, it will usually bloom again in fall. Glowing flowers and attractive gray-green foliage make Carolina Lupine a fine vertical addition to perennial, wildflower and cut flower gardens.

Landscape / Garden Uses

Growing 3 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide with an upright vase shape, the Carolina Lupine is ideal for use a specimen or grouping in perennial and meadow gardens. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens, meadow gardens, wildflower gardens, native gardens, and cottage gardens.

Growing Preferences

Carolina Lupine is very easy to grow in a moist to damp but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 4 hours or more of sunlight for best flowering and overall performance. Though it is moderately drought tolerant when established, it will appreciate an occasional drink during prolonged periods of summer drought. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. Foliage can be cut back about a month after flowering to encourage a second flush of blooms in late summer to fall.
