Description
Have you always wanted a Sugar Maple for its glorious fall color, but live too far south where they can't take the heat? Meet Acer leucoderme, commonly known as the Chalk Maple, formerly Acer saccharum var. leucoderme. This North American native will thrive as far south as Zone 9b in Florida and as far north as Zone 5, where winter low temperatures can be -20°F. It forms an oval to rounded canopy to 25 feet tall and equally wide, clothed in rich green leaves that turn brilliant shades of golden-orange, orange, and/or cardinal red in fall. The common name refers to the chalky white to gray bark color. Extremely versatile, Chalk Maple is easy to grow in full sun or heavy shade and moist, well-drained soil, and is heat, drought, and poor soil tolerant. It is one of those trees that always has you looking forward to its fall color show.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 25 feet in height and 20 to 25 feet wide, the Chalk Maple is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or straight or staggered rows as a screen or to delineate property lines or line a driveway. Space at least 12 feet from a driveway or walkway. It is also nice to provide shade around sitting areas, to frame the corners of homes and other structures, and for reforestation projects. It is a fine addition to sunny or shady woodland borders, wildlife gardens, and native gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 10 to15 feet apart for screens; 300 feet or more apart for space between trees; space trees at least 12 feet from a drive or walkway
Growing Preferences
The Chalk Maple is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soils of average to poor fertility and full sun to heavy shade. The canopy will be more dense in full sun and open with more shade. It doesn't like a poorly drained, constantly soggy or wet soil.
