Description

A workhorse in the landscape, the Cherokee Sedge is a great North American native grass that handles sun or shade or moist to average soil. Slowly but surely it forms a highly attractive gracefully arching clump of shiny, thin leaves that are often evergreen. In late spring, abundant greenish white flower spikes dangle above the foliage mound. As seed begins to form, the spikes evolve to a pleasing straw color and finally golden brown. Excellent in meadow gardens, rain gardens, natural areas, and as a groundcover in landscape borders and on slopes. An excellent grassy texture that contrasts beautifully with Hosta, Heuchera, ferns and other shade-loving perennials.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a clump to 18 to 24  inches tall and equally as wide, the Cherokee Sedge is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or containers or in groupings or as a border or a groundcover in landscape and woodland borders, preferring moist and shady to partially shaded areas. A perfect choice for use in shady woodland areas where so many other plants have problems. An excellent grassy texture that contrasts beautifully with Hosta, Heuchera, ferns and other shade-loving perennials. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens and woodland gardens.

Growing Preferences

Cherokee Sedge prefers a consistently moist soil and shady to partially shaded environment. We suggest to avoid direct afternoon sun. It is adaptable to most soil types, including clay, and grows well under trees with ample moisture because it does not present any root competition.
