Description

If you remember old-fashioned roses growing in your grandmother's yard and desire that beauty in your own garden, meet the Chestnut Rose, also known as Chinquapin or Burr Rose. Rosa roxburghii plena is an heirloom rose that first arrived to the U.S. in the 1800's. Appearing over a long period from mid spring through mid summer, the old-fashioned, abundant, lightly fragrant double blooms are packed with bright pink petals. Following the blooms are attractive, yellow, chestnut-like hips, hence the name. An extremely tough rose with disease resistant fern-like foliage that rivals the modern Knock Out Roses, you should never have to spray this one. A very easy to grow and fascinating specimen that provides both color and a refined foliar effect in the garden, the Chestnut Rose will make you the envy of all your neighbors regardless of whether or not you're a seasoned veteran rose grower!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Chestnut Rose is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a colorful hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Just make sure to provide ample room for it to grow to its mature size. A fine addition to rose gardens, cottage gardens, antique and heirloom gardens, and pink theme color gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 5 feet apart for hedges; 12 feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

The Chestnut Rose is very easy to grow in a moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves. Heaviest flowering occurs in full sun. Has good drought tolerance when established. Prune as needed in late winter to early spring.
