Description

Guaranteed to be a showstopper in your spring garden, the Clowning Around Native Azalea puts on a spectacular show for several weeks in early spring with its numerous clusters of snowball-shape, breathtakingly brilliant orange flowers, often blushed in red at the base. The pistil and red stamens extend about 1 inch beyond the mouth in a graceful upward curve. The flowers produce a delightful honeysuckle-like fragrance that is enjoyed by butterflies, hummingbirds and humans alike. Very lustrous dark green leaves turn orange-bronze in fall. The handsome leaves are exceptionally mildew free.

Landscape & Garden Uses

With an upright rounded irregular form from 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Clowning Around Native Azalea is perfect for use a specimen or in clusters in woodland borders or other shady to partially shaded areas. As this native azalea grows taller lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small specimen tree for use in home foundation plantings or landscape borders. Also useful in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to azalea gardens, orange or yellow theme gardens, native plant gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  We do not recommend as a hedge. Space 12 feet or more for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Clowning Around Native Azalea is very easy to grow. It prefers moist but well-drained humus rich soil and dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. Once established it is quite drought tolerant requiring supplemental water only during prolonged periods of dry summer weather. Native azaleas are very low-maintenance requiring little if any pruning. That said, occasionally we might prune a stray branch that is spoiling the natural form of the plant.

When seeing this plant out of stock I put myself on the waiting list for it to come back into stock. I got a prompt email letting me know it was available. I was so excited it I ordered it right away. I received my plants packed in the most unique way I've ever received plants before. You could tell those that packed them loved them as much as I did when I received them. They are so healthy and I can't wait to see them bloom.-------------------------------We are so glad you are pleased! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG
The azaleas were sent in 2 separate boxes, 1 in one box and 2 in the other.... the box of 2 azaleas are showing droopiness in the leaves - my gardener is watching them,,,the first azalea is doing very well. Wilson Bros Gardens does everything right, they show concern with any problem and immediately try to correct it. I will continue shopping for my garden needs with them. -------- WBG Response: Hi Bobbi - Thanks much for your review and compliments! Depending on the time of year and the temperatures, sometimes the foliage of plants will wilt a little during transit. Given some water, fresh air and sunshine they should do fine. That said, keep us posted as to how your azaleas do. One tip...after planting, and in the absence of rainfall, water newly planted azaleas only enough to keep the soil in the planting area damp to moist, but not constantly or soggy. Let us know if there's ever anything else we can help you with. We're at your service! - Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
