The Compact Cranberry Viburnum, commonly known as the Compact American Cranberry Bush, is actually not a cranberry at all. Though its edible fruit strongly resembles cranberries in appearance and taste, and, like cranberries, the fruits mature in the fall. In late spring through early summer, it produces abundant, beautiful, lacecap clusters of showy white flowers, followed by the bright red, sweet but tart-tasting berries that are rich in vitamin C. You can pick and eat them right off the bush, or use them to make preserves, jams, jellies, sauces, etc., which make delicious condiments for meat. If you don't eat the berries, the birds will! At about one-third the size of the species, Compactum grows to only about 5 to 6 feet high and wide, making it a better fit for smaller spaces or as a lower hedge.
