Description
The Compact Cranberry Viburnum, commonly known as the Compact American Cranberry Bush, is actually not a cranberry at all. Though its edible fruit strongly resembles cranberries in appearance and taste, and, like cranberries, the fruits mature in the fall. In late spring through early summer, it produces abundant, beautiful, lacecap clusters of showy white flowers, followed by the bright red, sweet but tart-tasting berries that are rich in vitamin C. You can pick and eat them right off the bush, or use them to make preserves, jams, jellies, sauces, etc., which make delicious condiments for meat. If you don't eat the berries, the birds will! At about one-third the size of the species, Compactum grows to only about 5 to 6 feet high and wide, making it a better fit for smaller spaces or as a lower hedge.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide at maturity, the Compact Cranberry Viburnum is ideal as a specimen in smaller garden spaces or as a hedge or grouping in larger landscape borders. It is also a lovely accent or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. It is a fine addition to edible landscapes, white-themed gardens, bird gardens, pollinator gardens, wildlife gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 4.5 feet apart for solid hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants.
Growing Preferences
Compact Cranberry Viburnum is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers a loamy soil rich in organic matter. For optimal flowering, at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day are recommended. It responds very well to pruning for shaping purposes. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.
