Description
When we think of oak trees, it's most often about large shade trees that require a lot of space to grow. But meet the Cutleaf Japanese Emperor Oak, Quercus dentata 'Pinnatifida', which reaches only 20 feet or so in height and approximately 15 feet wide when fully grown, making it a perfect fit for smaller landscape spaces. The size isn't the only appeal, as it is also one of the most attractive trees you'll ever lay eyes on. Its rounded canopy is clothed in large, 8 to 12-inch-long, deeply dissected, feathery leaves that emerge in shades of rose-pink, aging to dark green in summer and becoming golden-yellow in fall. The overall effect is similar to a lace-leaf Japanese maple, but on steroids. It's a somewhat slower grower, adding approximately 12 to 15 inches in height per year, but it's well worth the wait, becoming more dense and beautiful with every passing year. Its unusual color, texture, and form make the Japanese Emperor Oak a captivating specimen that is sure to be a conversation piece in the landscape, and its limited availability means you might be the only one in your area that has it growing in your landscape.
Wildlife Benefits
The acorns of the Japanese Emperor Oak are a food source for various birds and other wildlife, which can also use them for shelter. The flowers in spring attract butterflies, moths, and other beneficial insects.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide, with some sources reporting a height of 25 feet in ideal conditions, the Cutleaf Japanese Emperor Oak is ideal for a specimen in small to mid-sized landscape spaces, large containers, or in groupings where space allows. However, it may eventually need to be transplanted into the landscape over time. Its more diminutive stature makes it a good selection for home foundation plantings and other buildings, framing the corners or to accentuate a large entryway. It is a fine addition to wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 20 feet or more apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Cutleaf Japanese Emperor Oak Tree is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and six or more hours of sunlight daily. Established trees are drought-tolerant but might appreciate supplemental water during prolonged summer drought. A very low-maintenance tree that requires no pruning unless you want to remove some lower branches to expose more trunk. Young trees will benefit from fertilizer; however, older trees can usually get what they need from the soil and rainwater.
