Description
Aptly named, the Dancing Wind Big Bluestem is a dazzling North American native ornamental grass with foliage and flowers that sways so gracefully in the slightest breezes, bringing mesmerizing, graceful movement to the landscape or garden. It forms a clump to 6 feet high and 3 feet wide, clothed in blue-green leaves in spring, transitioning to green with red accents in summer, and finally to vibrant red and deep scarlet shades in fall. In midsummer, tall stems bearing yellow-green flowers appear just above the foliage, turning to burgundy and coppery-bronze shades in fall. Cut stems in winter are excellent for use in dried flower arrangements. A tough, self-sufficient grass that thrives in full sun and moist or dry soil when established, it is also salt tolerant, and the deer don't touch it! Dancing Wind makes for a fine vertical accent in small garden spaces, or impressive grouping, or mass planting where space allows.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and 3 feet wide, the Dancing Wind Big Bluestem is ideal as an accent in smaller garden spaces. It is imposing in groupings, drifts, or as a background in garden beds where space allows. It's great for naturalizing, and its salt tolerance makes it a fine choice for coastal areas. It is a fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, native gardens, bird gardens, cut flower gardens, red them gardens, and prairie gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 30 inches apart for groupings or mass plantings; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants
