Description

A distinct and elegant Rose of Sharon with many faces, no two flowers look the same on 'Danica'.  The only thing consistent about the flower color is the deep raspberry buds, which open to double flowers with with petals in shades of soft pink to white that are edged, tipped and/or flushed in raspberry, fuchsia and/or pink! Deep red veins in the center petals add another little peek of color. The eye-catching flowers attract butterflies and pollinators all summer long. This cold hardy beauty will provide a tropical look and feel in gardens where temperatures drop as low as -20F in winter! USDA Zones 5a-9b

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide, the Danica Rose of Sharon is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge in sunny landscape borders and home foundation plantings. As this rose of Sharon grows taller lower branches can be removed to form an attractive and colorful small tree useful as a stunning focal point specimen in small landscape spaces. Pruning is best done before new leaves emerge in late winter or early spring. A fine addition to tropical look gardens, butterfly and humming gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Rose of Sharon are very easy to grow and maintain. Simply plant them where the sun shines most of the day. Some light shade is tolerated but too much shade and plants will become leggy and flowering is diminished. They are not too particular about soil type and drought tolerant once established. They require little if any pruning, though respond well to it for shaping purposes or to remove a stray or broken stem.
