Description
This is the single-trunk tree-form version of Darkfire Loropetalum, also known as the Chinese Fringe Tree. The handsome, deep plum-colored foliage is a beautiful contrast and background for the red fringe-like flowers produced in abundance during late winter and early spring and sporadically in fall. With a height of 8 to 10 feet tall, including the trunk, and the canopy 5 to 6 feet wide, this handsome tree makes for an outstanding focal point specimen or two that can frame an entrance.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 11 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide depending on pruning, the Darkfire Loropetalum Tree is ideal for use as a specimen, in spaced groupings, or two can be used to frame an entrance. Its low water needs make it a good candidate for use in Xeriscape plantings. The dark plum-colored foliage contrasts nicely with plants that have yellow, light green, grey, or other light-colored foliage or flowers. It is a fine addition to purple theme gardens, bird gardens, topiary gardens, and the Xeriscape.
Suggested Spacing: 10 feet or more apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
Darkfire Loropetalum is easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. Avoid planting it in sites where the soil can be soggy or where it will be standing in water for extended periods. Once established, it is highly drought tolerant. The foliage is denser, and the flowering is heavier in full sun, but light shade is tolerated. We suggest five or more hours of sunlight daily for optimal overall performance and color. It requires no pruning but responds very well to almost any amount for shaping purposes and size control.
