Description

Magnificent, graceful and colorful, the Deodar Cedar tree, also known as Himalayan Cedar, is a large and fast growing coniferous evergreen tree with a pyramidal form and pendulous branches that are gracefully drooping at the ends. Equally attractive are the light grayish green needles and upright-facing cones. In the United States this tree grows 40 to 50 feet tall in about 20 years or so with branches from the ground up, so give it plenty of room to grow. The Deodar Cedar is one of those trees that really makes a statement in the landscape.

Landscape & Garden Uses

With an upright habit and pyramidal form 40 to 50 feet tall and 20 to 30 feet wide, the Deodar Cedar is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, as a background, or in tall privacy screen plantings in large landscape borders. Really nice near lakes and other bodies of water and around large boulders. Young trees can be grown in large containers but will eventually need transplanting to the landscape. A fine addition to conifer gardens and rock gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  15 to 20 feet apart for privacy screens; 35 feet apart for space between trees

Growing Preferences

When planted right and in the right spot, the Deodar Cedar is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. That said, established trees are exceptionally drought tolerant. As with so many other coniferous evergreens, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Good drainage is essential.  Some shade is tolerated however trees won't be as full. Exceptionally low maintenance requiring no pruning except to remove a stray or damaged branch.
