Description
Nothing says tropical more in the garden than elephant ears. While many types of elephant ears, such as Alocasia varieties, aren't cold hardy, Colocasia varieties, like 'Distant Memory', are dependable outdoor perennials. Distant Memory can tolerate winter low temperatures of 15°F. North of Zone 8a, it can be grown in pots that can be overwintered indoors or kept as an indoor houseplant year-round. Distant Memory forms a clump to 4.5 feet tall and 5 to 5.5 feet wide, with many stems featuring the signature, large, lustrous, dark mahogany-black leaves that resemble an elephant's ear. Its full habit makes it an excellent choice for containers. Easy to grow and low-maintenance, it thrives in full sun to partial shade, is highly heat- and humidity-tolerant, and prefers a consistently moist to wet environment. It even thrives in a pot placed in shallow water near the edges of ponds or bogs. Sure to be an eye-catcher and showstopper in the garden!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a clump with a full habit to 4 to 4.5 feet tall and 5 to 5.5 feet wide, the Distant Memory Elephant Ear thrives in the garden or in containers, and can even be grown year-round as a houseplant. In the garden, it is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces, or grouped or as a natural hedge in larger spaces. It is excellent either solo or combined with other moisture-loving plants in pots, planters, and other containers for situating around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces, or placed in shallow water around the edges of a garden pond, bog, or other body of water. North of USDA Zone 8a, where it won't survive winters outdoors, container-grown plants can be bright indoors when temperatures begin to drop below freezing. It is a fine addition to tropical gardens, perennial gardens, water gardens, and black theme gardens.

Growing Preferences
Distant Memory Elephant Ear is very easy to grow in moist or wet but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade (four or more hours of sunlight daily). It prefers a consistently moist to wet soil and will even grow in shallow standing water around the edges of ponds and bogs. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release flower food or natural or organic plant food.
