Description
An eccentric little tree named after the eccentric and entertaining author, the Dr. Seuss Japanese Maple is sure to entertain as well in the garden. An upright dwarf that might reach 6 to 10 feet tall when all grown up, it is densely clothed in some of the most unique foliage, which doesn't seem to know what it wants to do. The small, deeply dissected 5-lobed feathery leaves can be flat, scrunched or curved all on the same tree...on the same stem for that matter. The leaves emerge lightly variegated in shades of green and yellow to chartreuse darkening as summer approaches. Cooler temperatures in fall bring on orange and red shades. Can be grown as a shrub or lower branches can be removed to form an attractive small tree. Either way, Dr. Seuss is sure to be a highlight and conversation piece in the garden or in containers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its attractive characteristics, the Dr. Seuss Japanese Maple is best used as a specimen to draw attention. That said, you can plant in groupings of three or more in larger landscape spaces. It can also be grown in containers which can be situated on patios and decks and around other outdoor sitting or living spaces where the unique foliage can be enjoyed from close up.
Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape...that is, if you don't overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when selecting companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing groundcovers and other plants that won't interfere at all with your tree.
