Description

A extraordinary variety of the Korean Pine, 'Oculus Draconis', which means "dragon eye," has long and slightly twisting soft blue-green needles banded with creamy yellow, which makes the tree shine in the garden. What's really neat are how the needle clusters hang downward, giving the tree a lush and graceful weeping look. A moderate grower adding 8 to 12 inches of new growth per year, you can expect it to form a pyramid 8 to 10 feet in height at 10 years of age and around 20 to 25 feet tall and 10 feet wide or so at its base when all grown up. This tree makes a fabulous focal point specimen in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders or to frame the corners of the home, and is sure to be a an eye-catching conversation piece. It stands up to heat but do site it with some protectioon from strong winter winds in cold climates.

Note
There has been much controversy among experts as to if the Dragon Eye Korean Pine, Pinus koraiensis 'Oculus Draconis', is the same cultivar as Pinus koraiensis 'Jack Korbit'. Though they look very similar, 'Oculis Draconis'n Dragon Eye, has a faster growth rate.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 20 to 25 feet tall in height and 8 to 12 feet wide, the Dragon Eye Korean Pine is an eye-catching beauty perfect for use as a focal point specimen or in privacy screens in sunnt to partailly shaded landscape and woodland borders or to frame the corners of a home or other structure. It is also suitable for large containers but eventually would need to be transplanted to the landscape. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, Asian gardens and wildlife gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  Best as a specimen or accent in privacy screen plantings, or use to to frame an entrance, or in spaced groupuings as 12 feet+ apart

Growing Preferences

The Dragon Eye Korean Pine is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. As with so many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic; leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil is dry, provide water.
