Description

A recent new introduction from the worlds top Clematis breeder Raymond Evison, 'Duchess of Cornwall' is a compact free-flowering selection featuring flowers that change colors as the temperatures rise through the season. Beginning in late spring, large 4 to 6 inch single to semi-double flowers start out with dark violet-blue petals surrounding creamy yellow anthers at the center. As the season progresses and temperature rise the flowers will open a deeper imperial purple softening to a near mid-blue as they age. Duchess of Cornwall is a compact grower ideal for pots, planters and other containers where it might reach 4 to 5 feet tall on a trellis, stake or obelisk. It can also be used in the garden to cover short fences, rails, trellises or a mailbox post or to freely meander through perennial and shrub borders without taking over.

Note: All of our 1 gallon size Clematis vines are trellised 2 year old plants

Landscape & Garden Uses

Climbing 4 to 5 feet high and spreading the same, Duschess of Cornwall Clematis is ideal for growing on short fences and rails, trellises, mailbox pots, obelisks and poles. Excellent for pots, planters and other containers for situating on patios, decks and around other outdoor living spaces where the amazing ever-changing flowers can be viewed from close up. A fine addition to Clematis gardens and purple or blue theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  3 to 4 feet apart to cover fences, trellises, and walls

Growing Preferences

Duchess of Clematis is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Though it tolerates dry periods when established, it will appreciate an occasional watering in prolonged periods of dry weather. Soil moisture on plant growing in pots should be checked more frequently, especially during the summer. Make sure not to plant this one too deep as it tends to smother the plant.

Clematis Pruning Group 3

Clematis in group 3 consist of late-flowering species that bloom from mid-summer into fall. This group flowers on the last 2 to 3 feet of the current season's growth (new wood). They are easy to prune because you do not need to maintain any old wood. In February or March, cut each stem to a height of 6 to 12 inches making sure to leave two good buds along the stem below where you make your cut. New growth will emerge from these buds to produce the current seasons vines and blooms.
