The Dusky Maiden Smoke Bush is one of the most unique plants you'll ever plant and enjoy in your garden. Fuller than other Cotinus, Dusky Maiden is a hybrid cross of Cotinus szechuanensis and Cotinus coggryia 'Velvet Cloak'. It gets its name from the dusky colored foliage and cloud-like flowers resembling puffs of smoke. But the color show isn't only about the unique flowers. What's most attractive throughout the season are the almost circular and eucalyptus-like dark blue-green leaves heavily flushed with deep burgundy in spring that turn to dusky purple-green in summer before turning to shades of yellow, orange and red with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. Very tolerant of poor and dry soils when established so is a fine selection for the Xeriscape (low water needs). A site to behold in the garden!

Growing 5 to 7 feet tall and equally as wide at maturity, the Dusky Maiden Smoke Bush is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny landscape borders. Plant this conversation piece near patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the attractive foliage and flowers can be enjoyed from close up. Also does well in pots provided the soil is well drained. Line the interior of pots with a porous landscape fabric to prevent drainage holes from becoming stopped up with roots. A fine addition to rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  Best as specimen or in spaced groupings with plants 8 feet apart

The Dusky Maiden Smoke Bush is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained to dry soil of average to low fertility. It adapts very well to rocky soil and tolerates drought when established. dry and rocky soils. Poorly drained, constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. The best foliage color is achieved in full sun however will tolerate some light shade. We suggest a minimum of 6 hours direct sunlight per day.
