Description

We love this tough little grassy plant! If a low-maintenance evergreen carpet of deep green is what you need for a lawn, as a groundcover, or to fill the gaps between stepping stones and pavers, Dwarf Mondo Grass is your plant. It is an evergreen groundcover that looks like turf...very deep green turf with narrow, linear, grass-like, dark green leaves (each leaf to 2 inches long and 3/16” wide). Tiny, spherical white flowers are nestled in the foliage but for the most part are inconspicuous on this dwarf.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing only 2 inches tall and spreading slowly over a period of 3 years to a foot or more, Dwarf Mondo Grass is the perfect choice to fill the gaps between stepping stones and pavers. It holds up very good to foot traffic and will not spread across the surface of the stones or pavers as many other spreading groundcover plants will do. It is also great for use as an underplanting for shrubs or trees, such as Japanese Maples. Also useful as a soil cover in containers, where it serves as a cute little patch of "turf."

Spacing:  4 to 6 inches apart for quick fill;  8 to 12 inches apart if you have patience

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Mondo Grass variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Dwarf Mondo Grass is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and part shade to full shade. Morning sun is okay but foliage may fade to a lighter shade of green in direct afternoon sun. Filtered all day sun is okay. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, though temporary flooding is okay.
