Description
At about half the size of its parent, the ever-popular Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald Green,' 'Emerald Squueze' reaches maybe 8 feet tall and 2-3' wide at maturity, making it a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces and containers. Its upright, narrow conical form is excellent for a hedge or privacy screen where space is limited or for adding height in those narrow spaces in home foundation plantings and to frame an entrance. It requires no pruning or trimming to keep its dense form and is lovely as an outdoor Christmas tree. It is cold hardy to -30F and handles the heat in our Georgia USDA Zone 8 gardens.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With its upright habit and narrow conical form of about 8 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide, the Emerald Squeeze Arborvitae is ideal for use as a vertical accent in tight spaces or to frame entryways or corners in home foundation plantings. It is also perfect for a mid-height, evergreen privacy screen or hedge around patios and other situations where space is limited. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs) or for use as an outdoor Christmas tree in garden beds or containers.
Suggested Spacing: 2-2.5 feet apart for solid privacy screens or hedges; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Arborvitae are very easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil of average fertility, including clay soil, in full sun to light shade. We suggest a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight for best performance. Avoid planting in sites where the soil can be overly soggy or standing in water. Maintenance is minimal; very little, if any, pruning is ever required.
