A North American Native, Oenothera speciosa, commonly known as Evening Primrose, is a beautiful, rapidly spreading, flowering perennial groundcover that can be found in the wild growing in prairies, fields, and even along roadsides, but also thrives equally well in home gardens. It's an easy-care cultivar that forms a mound of rich green foliage, spreading by rhizomes and self-sowing where it's happy, which lends itself well to naturalizing in sunny borders. Depending on the location, from mid- to late spring through early to mid-summer, it puts on a breathtakingly beautiful floral show when the foliage becomes smothered in 2-inch-diameter, buttercup-like flowers that have a pleasant lemony fragrance. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators will appreciate the flowers, and songbirds will eat the seeds. Seeds that the birds don't eat might sprout to form new plants. Extremely easy to grow from Nova Scotia to Florida, heat, drought, and poor soil tolerant, Evening Primrose is one of those special flowering plants that will always have you looking forward to its bloom.

Growing 12 to 18 inches tall and spreading to 24 inches or more wide, Evening Primrose is a perennial that spreads by rhizomes and self-sows where it thrives. It can be grown in pots or smaller garden spaces, but it is best used as a low border or mass planting in sunny borders and along paths where it can spread naturally. It can also be effective as a filler plant around larger shrubs and small trees in landscape borders. In the wild, it grows in rocky prairies, fields, and roadsides. 

Evening Primrose is very easy to grow in moist, well-drained to dry soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. For best flowering, provide at least 6 hours of direct sun. Like many other perennial plants, constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. Heavy, dense clay soils should be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. Plants can be cut back after flowering to encourage a flush of new growth and possible continued flowering.
