Description
A beautiful evergreen plant for use in shade, woodland and other gardens where a serene mood is desired, Disporopsis pernyi, commonly called Evergreen Solomon's Seal, is a hardy rhizomatous perennial that will fairly quickly form a lush clump 18 inches or so wide and 15 to 18 inches tall in the garden. From late spring to mid summer, fragrant white flowers with a lemon scent appear in the leaf axils along the arching stems, contrasting nicely with the glossy, dark green leaves. The foliage compliments all other plants nearby and is nice for cutting and use in flower arrangements. Low maintenance and easy to grow, this plant is excellent as an accent plant in partially to heavily shaded small garden spaces or in groupings or massed where space allows. Perfect for Japanese and Zen gardens, or around the garden pond, and will handle dry shade under large trees when established.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 18 inches tall and spreading equally as wide or wider, Evergreen Solomons Seal is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and containers or in groupings in shade and woodland gardens borders. It looks really nice around garden ponds and boulders and will thrive in dry shade under the canopies of large trees when established. It combines beautifully with ferns, hosta lilies, heuchera and many other shade loving plants. A fine addition to shade and woodland gardens, Japanese gardens, Zen gardens and fragrance gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for groupings; 4 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Evergreen Solomons Seal is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full shade or part shade. Avoid direct afternoon sun. Established plants tolerate dry shade, which makes them perfect for growing under large shade trees and decks. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release plant food or natural or organic plant food.
