Description
An absolutely beautiful weeping form of our super hardy and easy-to-grow North America native Bald Cypress, 'Falling Waters' is clothed in the same feathery soft and lovely leaves as its cousins but on a smaller tree with branches that gracefully cascade like a water fall towards the ground. The needles emerge a neon green in spring maturing to medium green through summer then turning to unique and outstanding orange shades with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. Unlike most other coniferous trees that retain their foliage through winter, bald cypresses loose their needles to show off their reddish-brown exfoliating bark. At 15 to 20 feet tall and 15 feet or so wide at maturity, the irregular weeping habit ensures that no two trees will be identical, making for a unique specimen in sunny landscape borders or around patios, decks and other outdoor living spaces. Highly adaptable and hardy in USDA Zones 4a to 9b, Falling Waters Bald Cypress thrives in sunny sites and moist to wet conditions, even standing water, which makes it a fine choice for those sunny areas of the landscape where the soil tends to stay moist to wet, such as along streams or around ponds or other bodies of water. That said, it has good drought tolerance when established. A truly stunning and graceful specimen or centerpiece in the landscape.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and around 15 feet wide, the Falling Waters Bald Cypress tree is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in sunny landscape and woodland borders. Because it can thrive in moist to wet sites, it is perfect around ponds or other bodies of water, but is equally as happy in average garden soils and even tolerates drought when established. A fine addition to native plant gardens. water gardens, bog gardens, swamp gardens, rain gardens and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen or use two to frame an entrance
Growing Preferences
Being a North American native tree, the Bald Cypress is highly adaptable and exceptionally easy to grow in a variety of soil types, including clay, and likes full sun to light shade. It thrives in both dry or wet soils, even standing water. Maintenance is minimal to none. Pruning isn't necessary, however selective pruning for shaping is tolerated or to remove lower branches is okay. Avoid pruning in the spring when the tree is emerging from dormancy. Prune in late winter.
