Physocarpus opulifolius 'Fireside'

A super-tough, easy-care and fast-growing selection of our North American native species, the Fireside Ninebark features an upright rounded shrub 6 to 7 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide clothed in dark and hansome maple-like leaves. New growth emerges fiery red shades turning to dark red and then deep purple. The more sunlight, the darker the foliage. In spring to early summer, abundant round clusters of soft pink flowers with a yellow eye contrast beautifully with the dark leaves. The flowers are followed by clusters of attractive red seedheads the birds will enjoy feasting on. Layers of peeling red-brown bark on the branches and stems, hence the name "ninebark," take the stage during the winter months. A trouble-free and colorful beauty that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow. Extremely cold hardy to -40F, and you might be happy to know that Fireside is deer resitant, has demonstrated mildew-free foliage throughout the season, and has high tolerance to drought when established.
