Description

The 'Freya' Clustered Bellflower is an incredibly floriferous, well-behaved, non-invasive Campanula hirta that won't spread by seed. It forms a tidy 6" high by 12 to 16-inch wide clump of rich green foliage from which rise flower stalks to 18 inches high, bearing a profusion of pretty, lilac-purple to lavender, star-shaped flowers. The bloom begins sometime in April and continues through June. The flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators and are excellent for cutting and display in a vase or flower arrangement. Freya Bellflower is one of those flowering perennials that'll always have you looking forward to its bloom. It is a colorful accent in small garden spaces or groupings where space allows in sunny to partially shaded garden beds. In hot summer climates, it will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the sunlight is most intense.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Freya Clustered Bellflower is ideal for planting as an accent in small garden spaces and containers, or in groupings where space allows. It is a fine addition to purple theme gardens, butterfly and beneficial pollinator gardens, cut flower gardens, and cottage gardens.

Growing Preferences

The Freya Clustered Bellflower is easy to grow in moist, well-drained, neutral to alkaline, fertile soil. It will grow in full sun or part sun in cool to mild summer climates, but will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the heat and sunlight are most intense in hot summer climates. Five or more hours of sunlight daily are suggested at any location for the best flowering and overall performance. It appreciates a consistently moist (not wet) soil, especially during summer when growing in full sun. Plant it with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
