Description

If you're looking to create a tall evergreen privacy screen to block off an unwanted view, but have limited space to work with, meet the Full Speed A Hedge 'American Pillar' Arborvitae, a fast growing and tall evergreen conifer to 30 feet tall that adds up to 3 feet in height per year while maintaining a dense, narrow, columnar form to only 4 to 5 feet wide at maturity. This handsome and tough tree is easy to grow and stands up to cold (-40F), snow, and high wind, and the deer won't touch it. Deep green feathery foliage holds its color well throughout the year.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a narrow column 25 to 30 feet in height and only 4 to 5 feet wide, the American Pillar Arborvitae is ideal for use as an evergreen privacy screen or as a vertical accent or to frame corners in home foundation plantings. Perfect for where space is limited. It also grows well in pots and other containers where it serves as a unique centerpiece with foliage that contrasts nicely with flowers and other plants. A natural choice for conifer gardens, formal gardens, rock gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Spacing:  4 to 4.5 feet apart for solid hedge;  7 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Arborvitae are very easy to grow in most any average soil in full sun to part shade. A wide range of soils are tolerated, including red clay, but Arborvitae prefers moist but well-drained neutral to alkaline loamy soil. They don't like an overly dry site. Maintenance is minimal with very little if any pruning ever required.
