Description

One of, if not the most, cold-hardy of the Salvia greggii species, and an absolute hummingbird magnet, Furman's Red Texas Sage is a very easy-to-grow North American native perennial shrub. It forms a rounded shrub with fragrant green foliage up to 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide, featuring LOADS of brilliant red two-lipped flowers perfectly designed for a hummingbird's beak. Exceptionally hardy and drought tolerant when established, it thrives in blazing sun and heat to Zone 11, and withstands winter low temperatures of -10°F in USDA Zone 6. It is right at home in xeric, rock, and perennial gardens, and does well in containers. Plant one or more around the patio or other outdoor sitting or living spaces where the flowers and the hummingbirds feeding can be enjoyed from up close.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide, Furman's Red Texas Sage is ideal for growing in garden beds or large pots, planters, and other containers 18 inches or more diameter. You want a larger pot to give the roots plenty of room to grow, so you don't have to water as much during the heat in summer. Growing in the ground, the plant won't require as much attention to watering. Plant it near patios, decks, and other outdoor sitting and living areas where the hummingbirds' feeding can be enjoyed from close up, as well as the pleasantly fragrant foliage.  A fine addition to hummingbird gardens, perennial gardens, wildflower gardens, xeric gardens (low water needs), red theme gardens, and cottage gardens.

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of  USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7, where this Salvia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

A hardy perennial in USDA Zones 6-11, Furman's Red Texas Sage can be grown in garden beds or containers. Above Zone 6, it will be an annual unless you grow it in a container that can be overwintered indoors, where temperatures don't drop much below 20°F. Whether growing in the ground or containers, it prefers moist, well-drained soil and six or more hours of direct sunlight daily. It is highly drought-tolerant when established. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if the foliage starts to wilt on hot, sunny days in summer.
