Description

Always wanted a Redbud tree but didn't have the space, meet Garden Gems Amethyst, the first compact redbud with dark purple leaves that might reach only 10 feet tall when all grown up. Its smaller size makes it a good fit for smaller garden spaces or in containers that can be situated on sunny to partially shaded patios and decks or around other outdoor sitting or living spaces. In early spring, the naked branches and stems are clothed in abundant clusters of glittering pinkish-purple pea-like flowers. Immediately after flowering news leaves emerge maturing to a dark purple suffused with amethyst, holding their color throughout the warm season. An easy-to-grow North American native flowering tree for USDA Zones 5-9, meaning it will tolerate winter low temperatures to -20F and stand up to heat and humidity in hot climates.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to about 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the garden Gems Amethyst Redbud tree is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in smaller garden spaces and large containers of 18 inches or more in diameter. In large spaces it works well in spaced groupings 10 feet apart. Two can be used to frame an entrance. Especially nice around patios, decks, porches and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the pretty flowers and handsome foliage can be enjoyed from close up. For eye-pleasing contrast, under plant with a lighter colored ground cover or low growing shrub. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, native gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  11 feet or more for space between trees
