Special Attributes

Considered by Michael Dirr to be “the most handsome of the climbing honeysuckles,” and one the hummingbirds will thank you for planting, Gold Flame Honeysuckle is a selection that won't disappoint. It is a twining vine or small shrub that produces abundant clusters of extremely fragrant rose pink flowers with yellow throats that bloom in terminal whorls from spring through fall. The vine in our gardens produces red berries in the fall. As a vine, it grows 10 to 15 feet tall but can also be pruned to form a rounded shrub 4 to 6 feet tall and wide. Handsome oval-shape blue-green leaves and red stems add to the overall appeal of this magnificent vine.

This vine does not cling to walls and other surfaces, however, it will grow up and on just about anything that provides its vines something to twine around. If you don't have a trellis, arch or other structure suitable for this vine to grow on, it can also be grown as an attractive mounding shrub or very pretty groundcover.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10 to 15 feet tall as a vine, Gold Flame Honeysuckle is ideal for use to grow on arbors, pergolas, fences, rails, posts, mailboxes, trellises and other structures or supports its vines can twine around. Can be pruned to form a shrub 4 to 6 feet tall and wide. A fine addition to hummingbird gardens, cottage gardens, fragrance gardens and peach or pink theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  3 to 4 feet apart to cover fences or other structures

Cultural Preferences

Gold Flame Honeysuckle is easily grown in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. The vine produces more flowers and is more vigorous in full sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day and morning sun to dry the dew from the leaves. Quite drought tolerant when established and hardy in USDA Zones 5a-9b  Find Your Zone
