Description
This is the globe form version of the Goldcrest Monterey Lemon Cypress, a plant that pleases all the senses — sight, smell, and touch. It is perfect for the sunny sensory garden or in pots, planters, and other containers that can be situated on or around patios, porches, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. It features attractive, soft-textured, lemon-yellow foliage with a lemony scent that ages to bright green. This one actually appreciates and thrives in poor, low-fertility soils. It is excellent as an accent, or it can be used in spaced grouping, and two can be used to frame an entrance.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Goldcrest Lemon Cypress can be grown in the ground or pots and is a fine accent in garden beds, landscape borders, and home foundation plantings. Two can be planted to frame an entrance, and where space allows, it is stunning in spaced groupings. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, formal gardens, fragrance and sensory gardens, yellow-themed gardens, and xeric gardens (low water needs).
Growing Preferences
The Goldcrest Lemon Cypress is very easy to grow in well-drained soils of average to low fertility and six hours or more of sunlight daily. Planting it in soil that is too rich can cause accelerated growth, which weakens the plant; therefore, avoid overly rich soils. It is adapted to grow in poor, sandy, well-draining soils that are low in organic matter. Good drainage is essential as it does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil. This topiary globe form will require occasional trimming to maintain its tight, dense shape.
When growing in containers, first ensure that the pot has a drainage hole at the bottom and that its rim diameter is at least 8 inches larger than the diameter of the nursery pot it was grown in. Then, to prevent roots and other matter from clogging the drainage holes over time, line the interior of the pot with a porous material such as a landscape weed fabric. Fill the pot with a bagged potting soil. Avoid using potting soils with added fertilizer. Also, avoid using native dirt dug from the ground. Water as needed to maintain a lightly damp soil from the top to the bottom of the pot. It's best to deep soak at planting time and then provide some water when the top 2 inches or so of soil has dried.
