Description
A semi-dwarf selection that will be a shimmering "ghost" in the landscape, the Golden Ghost Japanese Red Pine might reach 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide at 10 years of age, and possibly twice that size over time. In spring its long, soft-textured, glossy light green needles take on golden yellow variegation, often fading to a striking near white during the summer. Folks have to touch the needles to make sure they're real. We've seen high resistance to foliage scorching, even in full sun exposure. In case you were wondering, "Red" in the common name refers to its reddish stems. Easy to grow and drought tolerant when established, Golden Ghost is a glowing focal point specimen for small garden spaces and conifer or rock gardens, where it is sure to be a conversation piece!
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Golden Ghost Japanese Red Pine is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in sunny garden beds, landscape borders and even home foundation plantings. Also suitable for containers that can be situated on sunny patios, decks and around other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water need) gardens.
Spacing: 16 feet apart for spaced groupings
Growing Preferences
The Golden Ghost Japanese Red Pine is easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. It prefers a moderately to slightly acidic soil/ We suggest 6 or more hours of direct sunlight per day for best overall performance. Has high drought tolerance when established. It does not like wet feet so make sure you choose a planting site that has very well drained soil. Does not require pruning however can be its candles can be trimmed annually by up to 50% of their height to maintain a smaller plant.
