Description
Discovered as a branch sport mutation on a Penny Mac Hydrangea, which was named after Penny McHenry, founder of the American Hydrangea Association, 'Golden Penny' shares most of the same attributes with its parents, except for foliage color. Golden Penny features bright yellow-green leaves. Otherwise, it is a classic mophead with an added bonus: unlike most other hydrangeas of this type, which need older branches from the previous year to bloom, it will bloom in colder areas even when the branches are killed to the ground. It blooms repeatedly during summer and into fall. The large, rounded flower heads are 6 to 8 inches across, and you decide the color. They are blue in acidic soils, lavender in neutral soils, or pink in alkaline soils. Add aluminum sulfate to the soil for blue flowers or pelletized agricultural lime for lavender or pink flowers. Either way, this is a wonderful plant that is easy to grow, the blooms are attractive for weeks and weeks, and it needs no special care at all. Sure to be a conversation piece in the garden.
Penny McHenry received the original plant as a gift in 1975. Over the years, she propagated, planted, and shared this hydrangea, which always seemed to grow especially well and bloom throughout the summer in her gardens. In 2000, she gave specimens for evaluation to noted hydrangea expert Michael A. Dirr at the University of Georgia, Department of Horticulture. He, in turn, was so impressed by its garden performance that he brought this hydrangea into the marketplace and to the attention of home gardeners. It has been extremely popular ever since.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 6 feet tall and wide, the Golden Penny Hydrangea is useful as an accent, in groupings, or as a colorful hedge in home foundation plantings and partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. It is also highly suitable for container culture and is ideal for use in cottage and cut flower gardens, as well as pink or blue-themed gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 4.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Golden Penny Hydrangea is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility. An acid soil will produce blue flowers, while a neutral to alkaline soil will create lavender to pink flowers. Add aluminum sulfate to acidify the soil and create blue flowers, and pelletized agricultural lime to sweeten the soil for lavender or pink flowers. The plants will tolerate full sun in northern zones; however, they appreciate some afternoon shade or filtered sun in warmer southern zones. We recommend at least 5 hours of sunlight per day, or all-day, lightly filtered sun, for optimal flowering.
Note: Golden Penny Hydrangea is an ever-blooming Hydrangea macrophylla species, similar to the Endless Summer Hydrangeas, that produces its flowers from buds formed on both new and old wood. So, prune as you would an Endless Summer or other everblooming Hydrangea macrophylla.
