One of the most attractive native ornamental grasses, the Golden Sunset Yellow Prairie Grass is a stately selection sporting a clump of rich green, wide-bladed leaves from which rise tall stems with feathery, yellow flower panicles. As the flowers turn to golden seedheads, the flower stems turn vibrant yellow. The foliage also turns to vibrant golden yellow to deep gold in fall. What's unusual is that this ornamental grass actually does produce what is considered a flower. The plumes have cute little bright yellow pollen sacs that stand out against the darker seed heads. The foliage might be 5 to 6 feet tall, while the flowers can soar up to 8 feet. Exceptionally low-maintenance and adaptive, Golden Sunset thrives in hot or cold climates in USDA Zones 3a-9b, and heavy clay to shallow, dry rocky soils, provided the soil is well drained. It prefers and will take all the sun you can give it. It provides excellent cover year-round for birds and mammals, and the seeds delight songbirds in fall and winter. Deer won't touch it.

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, the Golden Sunset Yellow Prairie Grass is ideal for a vertical accent in small garden spaces. Where spaces allow, it is imposing in groupings that can be used as a natural hedge. It is a fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, prairie gardens, rock gardens, bird gardens, yellow theme gardens, bird gardens, native gardens, cut flower gardens, and xeric gardens (low water needs).

Spacing:  24 to 30 inches apart for mass plantings or hedges; 6 feet or more for space between plants
