Description
A spectacular bicolor selection introduced by our friends over at Goodness Grows nursery in Lexington, Georgia. We've had this old-fashioned beauty growing in our gardens since prior to 2010 and it has never failed to please when it produces its LOADS of pink and creamy white funnel-shaped flowers that appear at the same time on the same plant. The butterflies and hummingbirds will thank you for planting this one and it's sure to be a conversation piece amongst you and your guests.
All grown up you can expect your Goodness Grows Weigela to form a large mound of arching branches 6 to 9 feet tall by 9 to 12 feet wide. The flowers open on old wood from the previous year so avoid fall or winter pruning. If desired, prune shortly after the spring bloom.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 9 feet tall and 9 to 12 feet wide at maturity, the Goodness grows Weigela is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens, and pink color themed gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 16 feet or more apart for space between plants.
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 4a, where this Weigela is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
When planted right, and in the right spot, Weigela are very easy to grow. They adapt well to most any average garden soil, preferring a well-drained but moist soil of average fertility. Established plants have good drought tolerance. Flowering is best in full to mostly sun though plants will tolerate some light shade, especially in the warmer southern regions where it grows.
